TL;DR — Choosing the right refrigeration equipment is a five-axis decision: format (walk-in vs reach-in), refrigerant (R290/R448A/CO2), duty (low-temp/medium-temp), controls (thermostatic vs BMS), and lifecycle cost (capex + energy + service). This guide breaks each axis down with 2026 Brisbane pricing.

Core equipment categories
Modular panel walk-ins, custom-built rooms, combination cool/freezer boxes. Sized to daily deliveries + 20% headroom.
Integral and remote-condensing open cases, curved-glass serve-overs, glass-door merchandisers.
- Ice machines & ice bins
Cuber, flaker and nugget machines for hospitality, seafood, medical and industrial use. Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman.
- Blast chillers & shock freezers
Rapid pull-down to 3°C in 90 minutes (chill) or -18°C in 240 minutes (freeze) — essential for HACCP-compliant cook-chill.
Insulated python trunks, glycol chillers, keg-room cooling and long-draw dispense for pubs, breweries and function venues.
- Monitoring & BMS
IoT temperature sensors, cellular data loggers, cloud dashboards and BMS integration for compliance and stock protection.
Walk-in vs reach-in — how to choose
The single most common equipment mistake we see in Brisbane fit-outs is choosing reach-in cabinets when a walk-in would have cost less over five years. Rough rule of thumb:
- Under 1.5m³ of storage: reach-in wins — small footprint, plug-and-play, low capex.
- 1.5–3m³: depends on floor space, ceiling height and traffic — model both.
- Over 3m³: walk-in nearly always wins on running cost per litre stored, and lets you take bulk deliveries.
Model the true cost including door-open frequency (multi-decks lose 30–40% more energy than glass-door merchandisers), refrigerant type and 5-year service intervals — not just the sticker price.
Refrigerants in 2026 — the AU phase-down
Australia's HFC phase-down under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act is squeezing high-GWP gases out of new equipment. What we're specifying in 2026:
- R290 (propane): hydrocarbon, GWP=3. Dominant in new self-contained cabinets and small integral cool rooms. Charge-limited by AS/NZS 60335.2.89 — safe when installed correctly.
- R448A / R449A: medium-GWP HFO blends. The current pack-system workhorse for supermarket and larger butcher work.
- CO2 (R744): GWP=1. Standard on new supermarket transcritical systems. High operating pressures — needs specialist install.
- R404A / R507A: being phased out of new installs. Still serviced on legacy equipment; plan a replacement path.
Monitoring, controls & compliance data
- 24/7 IoT temperature logging
Cellular sensors log every 5 minutes; SMS/email alerts on excursions.
- Calibrated probes & annual certificates
Traceable calibration paperwork that FSANZ auditors accept.
- BMS integration
Roll refrigeration data into your existing building management or POS system.
- Energy dashboards
Track kWh per cabinet per day and catch failing gaskets before spoilage.
