TL;DR — Dirty lines and warm beer cost a Brisbane pub twice: in yield (foam over-pour) and in flavour (yeast, bacteria, beer stone). A fortnightly caustic clean plus a properly designed glycol system holds beer at 2–4°C from cellar to tap and preserves the brewery's intended flavour profile. Hart Air runs scheduled line-cleaning contracts and installs glycol systems from single-tap taprooms to 40+ tap venues.

Why regular line cleaning matters
Beer is an ideal growth medium for yeast, lactic-acid bacteria and beer stone. Left un-cleaned for four weeks in Brisbane's warmth, lines develop:
- A yeast film that gives off-flavours (butter, cardboard, wet dog).
- Lactic infection that sours the beer.
- Beer stone (calcium oxalate) crystals that restrict flow and trap more yeast.
- Slow-forming biofilms that survive short caustic cleans and require acid periodics to break down.
The BII (British Institute of Innkeeping) standard and Australian brewery best practice both call for 14-day fortnightly caustic cleans as the minimum. Brisbane's ambient temperature pushes many high-volume venues to weekly.
Our cleaning process
- 01
1. Isolate & drain
Disconnect kegs, drain beer to line-end, prep pumps and cleaning bottles.
- 02
2. Caustic circulation
Circulate 2–3% caustic through lines for 15+ minutes; scrub couplers and FOB detectors.
- 03
3. Rinse & verify
Clean water rinse to under 0.1% residual; verified with pH strips.
- 04
4. Reconnect & pour test
Fresh couplers/gaskets, reconnect kegs, purge foam, pull two pints per tap and taste-test.
Glycol systems: design & install
A glycol beer system circulates chilled propylene glycol (typically 30% mix, non-toxic and food-safe) through insulated tubing running alongside the beer lines inside a Python trunk. This keeps beer at 2–4°C from cellar to tap over runs to 60m — the only way to serve draught beer at correct temperature in any Brisbane venue where the bar is more than 3m from the keg cellar.
What we design and install:
- Glycol chillers sized for Brisbane class 4/5 ambient, heat rejection sited outside the building.
- Insulated Python trunks (custom bundles of beer lines + glycol supply/return + gas line).
- Keg couplers, FOB detectors, secondary regulators and gas panels.
- Fonts, drip trays, chrome shanks and stout/beer tap hardware.
- Full commissioning: pressure test, pour test, temperature verification, staff handover.
- Full Python design
Sized for the number of taps, run length and gas requirements — not off-the-shelf.
- Sub-tropical glycol
Chillers spec'd for Brisbane 34°C ambient, remote condenser mounting.
- Commissioning report
Documented pressure test, glycol charge, pour temp — filed for you.
- 24/7 emergency
Cellar or glycol failure? Priority Brisbane dispatch, parts on the truck.
Line-cleaning & glycol service plans
Most Brisbane venues we look after run on one of three plans:
- Fortnightly clean — standard for most pubs and taprooms. Chemical + rinse + pour test.
- Weekly clean — high-volume venues and premium craft-tap houses.
- Fortnightly + quarterly deep clean — includes acid periodics to break down beer stone, coupler swap and FOB service.
Every plan bundles emergency call-out priority, glycol chiller PM and consumables (couplers, gaskets, cleaning chemicals).
Common problems we solve
- Excessive foam / low yield — usually glycol chiller undersized or Python insulation compromised.
- Butter or wet-cardboard off-flavour — diacetyl from yeast build-up; needs a deep clean.
- Sour draught beer — lactic infection; acid clean + gasket refresh.
- Slow pour / stuck taps — beer stone in the shank or FOB; needs an acid periodic.
- Warm beer at end of long-draw run — glycol return-line insulation failure or chiller capacity shortfall.
