TL;DR — Choosing display refrigeration is really three decisions in one: format (open vs glass-door vs serve-over), integral vs remote condensing, and refrigerant (R290 vs R448A vs CO2). Get all three right and you'll cut power bills 30% while selling more product. Get one wrong and you'll fight warm cabinets and foggy glass through every Brisbane summer.

The five main formats
- Open multi-deck
Best impulse purchase. Highest energy cost. Dairy, RTE meals, grab-and-go drinks in supermarkets and c-stores.
- Glass-door upright merchandiser
30–40% lower energy than open cases. Best for bottled drinks, dairy that turns slower, freezer product.
- Curved-glass serve-over
Cakes, patisserie, deli, meat, seafood. Staff-served, glass front, integral or remote.
- Straight-glass serve-over
Larger volumes, cleaner sight lines. Delis, butchers, halal shops.
- Undercounter & back-bar
Compact prep and beverage fridges under benches and behind bars. Solid or glass doors.
- Specialty (blast, wine, ageing)
Wine cabinets, cheese-humidity cases, meat-ageing rooms and blast chillers.
Integral vs remote condensing
Every display fridge rejects heat somewhere. Integral (plug-in) cabinets dump it into the retail space; remote systems pipe refrigerant to a condenser on the roof or outside wall. Rough guidance for Brisbane:
- Under 3 cabinets — integral usually wins on capex and simplicity.
- 3–8 cabinets — model both; remote often wins on running cost once air-conditioning load is factored in.
- 8+ cabinets or a full supermarket line — remote pack or CO2 booster nearly always wins.
In Brisbane's climate, remote condensing has an extra benefit: heat rejected outside the building doesn't reload the air-conditioning system, which can save another 10–20% on total HVAC-R energy.
Energy-saving upgrades
Whether you're installing new or refreshing existing display equipment, five upgrades typically pay back inside 18 months in Brisbane:
- Night blinds on open cases
Cover open display cases overnight — 15–25% energy saving.
- EC fan motor retrofits
60–70% less power than shaded-pole fans; run cooler, last longer.
- LED interior lighting
Brighter merchandising, less radiant heat inside the cabinet.
- Door-gasket refresh
Perished gaskets waste 5–15% energy — a cheap and fast fix.
- Defrost timer tuning
Most cabinets ship over-defrosted; tuning to actual load cuts energy without ice-up risk.
